Lafayette real estate is located in Contra Costa County, California. It is named after Marquis de Lafayette, an American Revolutionary War French military hero. The city has a population of 23,893 and is known for the upscale lifestyle enjoyed by residents. The city did not have a name prior to 1857 although there are unsubstantiated accounts that say it was called Brown’s Mill, Brown’s Corner, Acalanus, Dog Town and Centerville. When the post office was established in 1857, the name applied for was Centerville. However, due to another post office with that name already existing, LaFayette was chosen. The spelling was changed at a later date. Lafayette homes for sale include a large number of single-family homes. The majority were built between 1940 and 1969, followed by homes constructed from 1970 to 1994. New and historic homes are also present in Lafayette.
Lafayette is part of the greater San Francisco Bay Area and has a station on the BART public transportation system. Located between Walnut Creek, Orinda and Moraga, the city is locally known as “Lamorinda.” The city was incorporated in 1968 and is known for the top rated schools as well a mild climate, small town atmosphere and low crime rate. Residents of Lafayette are served by the Lafayette School District. The city is only 25 minutes from San Francisco providing a wealth of opportunity in addition to the recreational, entertainment and shopping available in Lafayette.
Briones Regional Park extends into the northern part of Lafayette and is maintained by the East Bay Regional Park District. The park’s highest point, Briones Peak is its highest point and Mount Diablo and Diablo Valley as well as the Sacramento River, Berkley Hills and Mt. Tamalpais are part of the scenic view from this point. The park is also the home of many animals native to this area including coyotes, cougars, black-tailed deer, turkey vultures, squirrels and red-tailed hawks. Several ranchers in the area hold a 100-year lease on parts of the park and use it for goats, cattle and sheep .
